Victorian cities may get new rail link

Victorian cities may get new rail link

24 Aug, 2011 04:13 PM
THE state government has released a proposed train route that would link Bendigo with Geelong and Ballarat.

Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder yesterday announced his government would examine the long-term feasibility of trains between the three cities.

The route between Bendigo and Geelong would pass through Castlemaine, Maryborough, Ballarat, Meredith and Geelong.

The proposed route would use the existing Geelong-Ballarat, Ballarat-Maryborough and Bendigo-Castlemaine lines.

Press play for a closer look at the plan.

The government will consider reopening the track between Castlemaine and Maryborough to link the three other lines.

Consultants will also consider reopening Harcourt and Golden Square railway stations. They will complete a $2million study over two years.

“It is part of the government’s plan to provide improved travel options for 400,000 residents in the Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo areas,” Mr Mulder said.

“The consultants will examine existing and future passenger rail infrastructure including stations, passing loops and signalling, and local residents’ views will be important.

“We are examining a number of options to improve public transport in these regions – both in the short and long term.”

The consultants will assess the viability of opening disused train stations, including Carisbrook and Newstead.

“The study includes railway station inspections, cultural, heritage and environmental investigations, infrastructure assessments and public transport planning,” Mr Mulder said.

Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong represent Victoria’s three largest cities outside Melbourne.

“It is important that the study considers possible future development or changes to transport along the corridor,” Mr Mulder said.

Another dumb idea, why not restore the duel line to Bendigo that was dismantled by Labor. Or put a line to the Airport. A waste of $2,000,000.

Consultants considering "local residents’ views" is a good move.

I like the idea of a 'ring road' on rail to Geelong if there is sufficient patronage to cover the cost. Currently many people in the towns along the proposed route have no public transport option except maybe the occasional bus.

However, it beggars belief there is no mass transport option to the Airport. I for one would love to be able to train to Spencer Street and then onto the airport. No more kangaroo fraught early morning drives to expensive so-called ‘convenient airport parking’, no more bleary eyed drives home after exhausting flights.

Come on Ballarat, there is a lot of work going on in NSW about the feasability of a fast train rolling down from Newcastle or even Brisbain down to Melbourne. The studies are being done so jump on board and grab a bit of it for your selves.

A little future planning may be big asset in the fiture.

It's comming !
