Vatican vetos Deacons in St Kilian’s

24 Nov, 2009 09:33 AM
THE Vatican has said no to the proposed ordination of four women and three men as Anglican Deacons at St Kilian’s Catholic Church.

Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst Bishop Joseph Grech said there would have been wider ramifications if the ordination had gone ahead.

”After much discussion with Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto and the Vatican, the ramifications were investigated,” he said.

(Archbishop Lazzarotto was appointed the apostolic nuncio to Australia in January last year).

“The Catholic Church’s doctrine on the ordination of deacons and priests is very well known,” Bishop Grech said.

“There were certain issues within the doctrine that created problems. It’s the best thing for both churches.”

Bishop Grech said the church made sure it did all its homework before agreeing to allow the ordination to go ahead in Bendigo’s oldest catholic church and that he continued to have a great rapport with Anglican Diocese of Bendigo’s Bishop Andrew Curnow.

“This relationship is maintained on honesty and we’ll continue to work together in the future,” he said.

The ceremony was believed to have been the first time women would have been ordained as deacons in a Catholic church in Australia.

St Paul’s Cathedral closed earlier this year due to safety concerns and left the Anglican Church without a suitable venue to hold ordinations.

Bishop Curnow said he was not aware of the exact reason for the decision but he understood there was an issue of four women being ordained in the church.

“I received a phone call about a week ago that a problem had arisen,” he said.

“It’s my understanding that the issue was with the Catholic hierarchy and not in Bendigo.

“We don’t have control over the Catholic policy and we’re at their behest.”

Bishop Curnow said he’d graciously accepted an offer for the ordination of three men and four women to be held at St Andrew’s Uniting Church on Sunday.

What utter Contempt the Vatican has for its people, its Bishop and his Papal Nuncio. The People of Bendigo Anglicans and Catholics and the wider ecuminical movement must be saddened by this "Slight of Hand" perpetrated from an increasingly irrelevant Medievial European organisation.

Great to hear! Nice to see that some things are still sacred and that common sense prevailed over this race to be the 'first' claim to fame.

At least the world will know who and where we stand, for good or for bad (depending on which side of the fence we're on). For Anglicans considering "leaving home," Rome may be far far away but it still rules. Can we still open the cheque book?

So we are all the way over here on the world map where no one cares about us but we are ruled by two overseas mobs, the Vatican and the Queen. Gives us a break we are old enough to look after ourselves.

All children in the eyes of God? Yep so long as you're Catholic. Aren't all churches a place of worship to God? Religion will never change! What ever happened to do unto others as you would have them do unto you?

To all those who are upset by this - Start your own Church and leave ours alone. You wouldn't like me walking into your house and start re-arranging the furniture would you?

If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 2 John 1 -10 Praise God Rome picked up where the local incompetents failed us.

The ecumenical movement includes the Orthodox churches and those Anglicans who believe ordination of women priests is contrary to the faith of the apostles. Most would know the ordination of women has caused splits in the Anglican communion. For that reason the proposed ordinations in the Catholic church would have been very unhelpful in ecumenical relations with the Orthodox and traditional Anglicans.

It's a travesty the prospect of such ''ordinations'' occurring in a Catholic Church were even considered in the first place. It says a lot about the state of the Catholic Church whose churchmen have little regard for maintaining the integrity of the Catholic Faith. Thank goodness the Vatican at least seems to be doing something about this. Allowing Anglican ordinations to occur in a Catholic Church causes confusion and scandal to the Catholic faithful, already confused about the nature of their Faith (thanks in part to the failings of their priests and bishops to properly enunciate the Faith in all its purity). Specifically, Catholic doctrine is clear that sacraments occurring outside the Catholic Church are gravely illicit - only within the Church can sacraments (e.g.: Holy Orders) be licitly administered. Moreover, the Anglican version of Holy Orders is considered so defective that it is not a valid sacrament in the first place (unlike, for example, the Orthodox, who have kept the validity of this Sacrament, even if their dispensing of it is illicit). Poss777, your comments are very illogical : as truth and error are not equal in God's eyes.
