Unfurling a week of activities

06 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
NAIDOC Week began in earnest yesterday with a flag-raising ceremony for Bendigo’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at the Town Hall.

Mayor Rod Campbell and Cr Rod Fyffe were joined by more than 250 Bendigonians who braved the chilly conditions for the ceremony.

Jarra Jarra elder Uncle Brien Nelson presented a traditional Welcome To Country followed by a didgeridoo performance.

Master of ceremonies Aunty Lyn Warren acknowledged the traditional Jarra landowners.

Mrs Warren said the raising of the two flags was symbolic in recognising Bendigo’s Aboriginal elders and also the positive future for indigenous people.

‘’The flag raising is an important part of starting NAIDOC week in recognising the elders and starting a fantastic week of events and activities,’’ she said.

‘’It’s also about looking towards a positive future for local Aboriginal people and recognising their achievements in the community.’’

NAIDOC week is a nationwide event and celebrates the culture, history and positive contributions indigenous people make.

This year’s theme is Unsung Heroes — Closing The Gap by Leading Their Way and recognises individuals who help indigenous Australians realise their full potential.

Indigenous art exhibitions, film screenings and musical events are part of this week’s activities.
