POLICE have confirmed an explosion on take off caused a Tiger Moth to crash into trees killing two men at Maryborough airport this afternoon.
Sergeant Luke Kinder of Maryborough police said one of the crash victims was a member of the Maryborough Aero Club but declined to release names.
Sergeant Kinder said the crash scene would be locked down until Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigators arrived tomorrow.
The two men died when the Tiger Moth crashed into trees at the north end of the bitumen Maryborough airport runway about 5pm.
Emergency services, including the Country Fire Authority and all police units from Maryborough, rushed to the scene.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman confirmed two people died when the Tiger Moth hit trees on take-off.
He said paramedics were called to the scene at 5.10pm.
Bendigo Advertiser journalist Brett Worthington said emergency services had cordoned off an area around the crash site and smoke could be seen rising from the trees.
He said police and CFA members left the site about one hour ago.
He said State Emergency Service volunteers had earlier been working in an area of trees where the plane crashed.
A media helicopter hovered above the airport for a short time before leaving.
A road block was put in place near the entrance to the airport at the intersection of Pekin and Leviathan roads.
