Truck theft proves costly for Bendigo man

13 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
A Bendigo man has been robbed of his $400,000 truck and his livelihood.

The truck was stolen from a depot in Woodend sometime on Thursday night, with the thief cutting a hole in the fence and driving the vehicle out.

Emmitts Excavations operator Tony Emmitt said he had to stand down three staff members because of the theft. Mr Emmitt said the equipment on the truck was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and was used for drilling pipelines in his gas contracting business.

“I’ve probably only had it for about six months; all the equipment was near new,” he said.

“It had a directional drill and brand-new excavator on the back, plus it was loaded up with electrical equipment.”

Mr Emmitt is hoping that because of the truck’s size, and its unusual cargo, someone will have seen it.

“The truck was out of fuel so it would have had to go to a servo right after it was stolen,” he said.

Police are viewing CCTV footage from nearby petrol stations.

Mr Emmitt said he believed the theft was premeditated.

“The truck works in Bendigo and Woodend and it only stays overnight in Woodend every now and then, so it was definitely an organised thing,” he said.

“They have had to break in and hot-wire it, and it’s a pretty difficult thing to get moving.”

It is an Isuzu 1400 tray truck, about 10-11 metres long with white toolboxes down either side.

“On top was a yellow Vermeer directional drill and a blue Airman excavator,” Mr Emmitt said.

“It’s got ramps at the back, all white and it had a big water tank up the front. Inside it had gas welding equipment and electronics for the drill.”

Without the truck, the future for Mr Emmitt and his employees is unclear. Much of the equipment was uninsured, with insurance costs outweighing replacement costs, and Mr Emmitt said he could wait months for any claims to be processed.

“It’s basically my livelihood gone,” he said.

This gentleman is so, so mistaken. Yes, the Insurance is costly, but no where near the cost of the property stolen. The premium would have in fact been peanuts.... in comparison. He could have also Insured his business for his loss of trade.. It's called Business Interruption.

Why let your business go to the wall when it is so preventable.

It's probably interstate by now... Yes I agree with Bacho, you definitely need Business Interruption Insurance. Most Insurance Companies have pay by the month. Surely that would have been an option.I used to work for an Insurance Co. and believe me, with a rig that valuable, I know what I would have done..Its the scenario of "It won't happen to me, who would steal such a huge thing like that"..Well it does happen. Well I hope that the police find it..

I am an insurance Broker in Bendigo and this article is another form of advertisement for us. Insurance costs ourweighing the replacement costs? I don't think so. This man, like so many in recent times and too tight to pay for insurance. There are monthly payment options, or options to ellect higher excesses which make insurance more affordable. It is wake up calls like these which help promote what we do. Whether it be simple car or home and contents insurance, or Business insurance the cost of the premium is minimal compared to the cost of a total loss should one occur. Goodluck to Mr Emmitt

Don't know if Broker, 13/02/2012 , is from the same Insurance brokers in Bendigo that I used for the first time in 2011. Very pleased with the service and the peace of mind I have as a result.

Of course the real test comes should I have to make a claim!
