KOKODA plane crash victim Peter Holliday was remembered on Saturday night and almost $4000 raised for his family when Kangaroo Flat played Maryborough in a tribute game.A crowd of more than 1000 packed Fulton Hogan Oval to remember the former Kangaroo Flat and Newbridge player who was killed this month in a plane crash in Papua New Guinea. A minute’s silence was held before the match, which the Roos won by one kick, 17.17 (119) to Maryborough 17.11 (113). The match, which was organised by Kangaroo Flat member Leigh Stevens, was the first in a series of fund-raisers for Peter and Shonia Holliday’s two sons, Smith, 2, and Miller, six months. Ms Holliday said the family was amazed by people’s generosity.“We were blown away by the support,” she said. “Everyone came out on a cold wet night, it was fantastic. The guard of honour and the minute’s silence was very moving.”The family was also impressed that the best player was awarded the Peter Holliday Medal.Throughout the match the club conducted a “tin rattle” and raffle to raise money for the family.Mr Stevens said it was great night.“On the night we raised $2677 and on top of that the senior team and coaches put in an extra $700,” he said. Ms Holliday said: “That amount is unbelievable.” During the night other private donations from businesses were made to the family, which will push the grand total to more than $4000. Kangaroo Flat Football Netball Club president Paul Brooks said the game was a fitting tribute to Mr Holliday, who played 77 games for Kangaroo Flat and 11 for Newbridge.“It was a great atmosphere,” he said.A plaque was presented to the family, which will be placed on the club’s Tree of Knowledge, a tribute to Mr Holliday’s father, who was killed in a motorbike accident five years ago. “The family has connections with this club going a long way back,” Mr Brooks said.“Peter played all his junior football at the club and his dad also played here.“This is what a community club is all about, getting involved and helping out, and obviously Shonia is going to need a lot of support,” Mr Holliday’s beloved Western Bulldogs presented Ms Holliday with a jumper signed by Brad Johnson. The Peter Holliday Appeal will hold a goods and services auction at the Schweppes Centre on Friday, September 18, at 7pm.
