TIME is running out for young Victorian women to access the free cervical cancer vaccine, the Cancer Council Victoria has warned.Girls and women who have not yet had the vaccine must do so before the Australian Government-funded, community-based catch-up program for females aged 12 to 26 ends on June 30.Women who wish to access the free vaccine must have their first dose by June 30, and complete subsequent free doses by December 31. Women who access the vaccine from July 2009 will have to pay about $450 for all three doses.Bendigo woman Hayley Pine is one of many to take up the offer of the free vaccine and is encouraging others to do the same.“It’s beneficial to your health,” she said.“I had a health scare and thought 'why not help myself out and get this free vaccine?'”Even if you are well, it is still a prevention of what could happen.”The vaccine will continue to be administered free of charge to girls in Year 7 through the school-based National Immunisation Program. From June 30, the vaccine will no longer be free for schoolgirls from Year 8, who have already been offered the vaccine.
