BENDIGO Donor Centre employee Mary Peel wants to see Bendigo win the Heart of Victoria challenge and is calling on residents to roll-up their sleeves this week. The state-wide blood challenge was launched last week and seeks to find the regional town with the most blood donors by March 21.Mary along with her husband Andrew, who was recently snapped by the Bendigo Advertiser making his 100th donation, have made a combined total of more than 250 blood and plasma donations in the past 20 years. After hearing about the blood challenge last week, the pair have again signed up to give this month. The couple have also witnessed first-hand how blood and plasma donations can make a life changing difference.“Our eldest child Katy developed Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Pupura when she was just five years old,” Mary said. She said Katy, now 16, required two units of the plasma product and enabled her to lead a happy and healthy life. The centre’s communication relations manager Belinda Baker said Mary has been working at the Bendigo Donor Centre for 13 years.“Thank you Mary, Andrew and family for your ongoing support of the Bendigo Donor Centre and the Blood Service,” Mrs Baker said.“Together you have helped the Australian Red Cross Blood Service save many Australian lives.”
