JUNORTOUN residents Reg and Barb Hamilton played a waiting game last night as the irrigation channel on their property threatened to burst its banks.
Mr and Mrs Hamilton are on 40 per cent allocation of recycled water from Coliban Water and said they had been contacting the Government body asking them to turn the irrigation pump off.
“Our dam is full and the water has already spilled out into one of our paddocks,” Mrs Hamilton said.
“They need to turn off the pumps.”
Mrs Hamilton said her concern was that if rain continued in the night, the banks would burst and the neighbouring business, Rodilesa Plant Supplies, would be flooded.
“It’s also so much water going to waste,” she said.
“It is a mismanagement of a precious resource.
“It is frustrating to see all this water running away and all that needs to be done is for the pump to be turned off.
“We’re wasting rainwater and recycled water.
“It is easy to see why they are in so much debt when they lose so much water.”
Coliban Water acting general manager for operations and head works Ross Johnson said crews were aware of the channel overflowing but were working on higher priority calls.
“Excess water has gone into a lot of channel systems,” he said.
“The systems have picked up a lot of storm water and the crews are doing their best to stop damage to private properties.
“It has been a very busy weekend for our crews.”
