Sun Loong awakens

13 Apr, 2009 04:00 AM
IMPRESSIVE crowds at the Chinese Spring Festival and the awakening of the Dragon yesterday show Bendigo is still in touch with its Chinese heritage.

Costumes and authentic dances took centre stage under the pavilion in the Chinese Gardens as tales of love, romance, strength and power were told.

Almost 100,000 fire crackers were set off to awaken the great dragon, Sun Loong from his slumber.

Today Sun Loong will make his one and only appearance of the year, winding his way through the streets of Bendigo at the Bendigo Advertiser Gala Parade before returning to his resting place through the big red doors at the Golden Dragon Museum.

The parade starts at noon at Mitchell Street and travels along Pall Mall to finish at Chapel Street.

Following the parade, Sun Loong will return to his slumber at the Golden Dragon Museum.
