FOR RMIT media student Jess Hallay, the 2011 Groovin the Moo festival was a chance to test out his new camera.
The 20-year-old filmed scenes for the entire day – the trip from Melbourne, getting into the showgrounds, the costumes people wore and some of his favourite bands.
Jess created a short film, coupled with The Wombats’ song Jump Into the Fog, and posted it online.

“I had just got a new camera and I wanted to put some footage together of my friends,” he said.
“(The Wombats) are definitely one of my favourite bands and Jump Into the Fog sums up how enjoyable the day was.”
It came to the attention of the Groovin the Moo organisers, who were impressed with Jess’s efforts. At this year’s event, Jess is the festival’s chief film-maker.
“I didn’t imagine anything like that at all,” he said.
“The response it has been getting is unbelievable – it’s great to get so much recognition.”
Jess’s all-access pass this year means he will be getting vox pops on the day, be backstage interviewing bands and capturing the atmosphere of the regional music festival.
Jess is heading into his third year of a media course at RMIT and is hoping for a career behind the camera.
“I love being behind the camera,’’ he said. ‘‘I never expected to land at GTM and it shows what surprises are around the corner.”
