Queen Street opening work beats the schedule

09 Feb, 2010 10:35 AM
WORK to open Queen Street to through traffic has been finished ahead of schedule.

Bendigo’s mayor, Cr Rod Campbell, and Cr James Reade of Sandhurst ward inspected the work at the intersection of Mitchell and Queen streets yesterday.

Cr Campbell said the project would help traffic movement in the CBD.

“It will improve vehicle flows and reduce the amount of traffic on Mitchell and Hargreaves streets,” he said.

Testing and upgrading of the traffic signals will be completed this week.

Cr Reade said it was important motorists noted the changes to the intersection.

“This is a significant change to CBD traffic movement and when the traffic lights become fully operational, barriers will be taken down to allow the intersection to operate as a normal cross road,” he said.

“In the meantime, the intersection will continue to operate under the previous traffic conditions.

“The upgrade to the intersection was a priority because of traders’ concerns about increased traffic congestion on Mitchell Street as a result of improved patronage on city buses.”
