THE City of Greater Bendigo is continuing to assess the damage caused by storms earlier this month.
Chief executive Craig Niemann said the council had received 300 calls for assistance over the Labour Day long weekend as a result of the downpour.
“This was a major storm event that caused some significant localised flooding, especially in parts of Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk and Quarry Hill, which received 100mm of rain in a matter of hours on Friday alone.
“The amount of rain that fell in parts of these areas was overwhelming.
“Drainage infrastructure, designed for normal rainfall, struggled to cope with the sheer volume of water.”
Mr Niemann said staff were kept busy clearing drains, removing debris from roads and floodways, and dealing with fallen tree limbs in an effort to keep the community safe.
“Thirty of our staff worked well into the night on Friday taking calls and assisting residents.
“Eighteen staff worked on Saturday and 10 on Sunday and Monday to assist the community.
“All the issues that have arisen from the storms have been documented and the council will look at what can be done to rectify some of the problems that have been logged.
“Flooding issues have emerged as a result of last weekend’s storms that have not been evident in the city’s previous storm events, and it will take some to fully investigate all of the issues identified and develop solutions.
“Each year the council, through its capital works program, undertakes a range of improvement works to upgrade the existing drainage infrastructure and install retention basins to allow the system to better cope with storms.
“These works are undertaken on a prioritised basis, and problems identified by this latest storm event will also be prioritised and included in the program in the future.”
Mr Niemann said the rain also affected some ground works at the Chinese Precinct Redevelopment, and Park Road would have to be closed until Easter.
