Statewide report gives credit to our schools

01 Dec, 2009 08:25 AM
CENTRAL Victorian schools have been given a pass mark on the State Government’s first education report card.

The online register of government schools compares their performance against statewide trends.

Only three schools in the region are performing lower for student learning than the rest of the state.

Those performing highly include primary schools in Bendigo, Eaglehawk and Elmore.

And when it comes to happiness ratings, students at Bendigo North and Specimen Hill primary schools and Weeroona and Kyneton secondary colleges rank with the top in the state.

They’re measured through a rating combining student attendance rates and results from the annual students’ attitudes to school survey.

Education Department regional director Ron Lake described the results as “quite pleasing”.

“It shows that many schools that were considered to be disadvantaged are, in actual fact, doing quite well,” he said.

“This is the really pleasing thing.”

Mr Lake said that when compared to the state average, some results did not look good.

“But in terms of intake adjustments, they are doing quite well,” he said.

Mr Lake said the data gave a new perspective on the state of education and the information would be used for better allocation of resources.

The ratings are based on the combined results of the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy and Victorian Essential Learning Standards.

The soon-to-be-closed Weeroona College’s primary section is performing below other schools in student learning ratings.

Primary schools at Kerang South and Nanneella Estate, near Rochester, are the other two schools below par.

On state rankings for student engagement and wellbeing, seven regional schools rate below the average.

Primary and secondary schools in Castlemaine and at nearby Winters Flat ranked poorly, as did primary schools at Echuca East, Kerang South, Kangaroo Flat and Kennington.

Results for independent and Catholic schools are yet to be released.
