POLICE have again been horrified by irresponsible drivers clocked at well over the speed limit.
The drivers were nabbed just hours before the end of statewide Operation Aegis, which focused on cutting the holiday road toll.
Senior Sergeant Mark Edwards of the Bendigo traffic management unit said a woman had her three-year-old child in the car as she drove at 161kmh in a 100km zone on the Calder Highway at Ravenswood.
The 24-year-old from Metcalfe was detected by police at 4pm on Sunday.
Her car was impounded for 48 hours and her licence suspended for 12 months.
“It blows our minds,” Senior Sergeant Edwards said.
“It’s bad enough travelling at that speed in the first place, but to do it with a young passenger in the car is ridiculous.”
At 8.45pm on Sunday a 40-year-old Castlemaine woman was clocked at 148kmh northbound on the Calder Freeway at Elphinstone.
Her vehicle was also impounded for 48 hours and her licence suspended for 12 months.
Operation Aegis finished with a holiday road toll of 16, two more than in 2008-09.
An average of more than 1700 traffic offences were recorded on each day of the operation.
Police conducted 357,303 breath tests, and 1218 drivers exceeded the blood alcohol concentration limit. This equated to 1 in 293 drivers over the limit.
Statistics from the operation included:
* 1939 roadside drug tests; 30 drug offences; 9937 speeding offences; 2107 mobile phone offences; 2176 seat belt offences; 1058 unlicensed drivers; and 576 disqualified drivers.
