A FIRE tore through another Maryborough sports venue on Wednesday night only days after a suspicious blaze destroyed the clubrooms of two community groups earlier this week.
Sixteen firefighters rushed to the town's football and cricket oval, Princes Park, after its grandstand was set alight on Wednesday night.
Maryborough Fire Brigade captain Darryl Wagstaff said the crew arrived at the scene about 8.20pm.
"On our arrival, part of the flooring and seating structure of the grandstand had been set alight," he said.
In a fortunate circumstance, captain Wagstaff said three young boys who were passing through the area at the time of the blaze immediately grabbed hold of a nearby fire hose reel and extinguished most of the flames.
"We would like to commend the efforts of the three young fellas who tried to save the structure of the grandstand," he said.
The grandstand suffered about $3000 worth of damage, and the fire is being treated as suspicious.
Now Maryborough police will investigate the possible links between a spate of fires that have occurred in the region over the past four weeks.
Another fire ripped through the clubrooms that housed community groups the Maryborough Angling Club and the Goldfields Sporting Club on Monday night.
It took 30 firefighters 45 minutes to contain the blaze, which has also been labelled as suspicious.
Detective Tony Mason, from the Maryborough criminal investigation unit, said car tyres had also been set alight on roadways over the past weeks on at least four separate occasions.
"We aren't sure yet if there's any possible connection with the last one and any of the others," he said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Maryborough police on 5460 3300 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
