THE Sheriff’s Office recouped more than $35,000 in outstanding fines after a blitz on Thursday.
The joint operation between the Sheriff’s Office and the Bendigo and Maryborough police highway patrols took place in the Maryborough region.
Acting Sergeant Steven Cunningham said 35 people were picked up on warrants and a further 28 for speeding, drink-driving or failing to obey road laws.
During the five-hour blitz, seven motorists were issued with unroadworthy notices and fined for driving an unsafe vehicle.
Nine drivers were caught speeding, four for failing to display P-plates and two for failing to wear a seatbelt.
Three people were caught driving without a valid driver’s licence or driving while suspended and one man was caught drink-driving.
Acting Sergeant Cunningham said police conducted 1022 preliminary breath tests during the afternoon.
A Hoppers Crossing man was the only person to test positive, after he blew 0.08 per cent.
It was his second drink-driving offence.
While on their way to Maryborough, Bendigo police stopped a 22-year-old man from Bet Bet who was driving at high speed on the Bendigo-Maryborough Road at Eddington.
The driver was detected doing 142km/h in the 100km/h zone.
He was fined $508 and had his licence immediately suspended for six months.
Shortly after, a Bendigo man was stopped after he was caught driving without a seatbelt.
Further checks found he was driving while suspended and that he had failed to change his address on his driver’s licence. He will be charged on summons.
