BENDIGO’S State Emergency Service team is calling for volunteers to attend its weekly training session on Thursday.
The unit has about 50 volunteers who assist victims of floods, bushfires and road accidents and help out in search and rescue operations.
Team leader Brett Walsh said the unit was also always in need of old cars for SES training.
Volunteers can also help out with administration duties.
“We are on call 365 days a year and there’s a range of roles that need filling,’’ he said.
Bendigo resident Natalie Stanway has been a volunteer for 18 months and said it was a great way to learn new skills and give back to the community.
“It teaches you and challenges you a lot and you get involved with a team of committed and community-minded people,” Mrs Stanway said.
Mr Walsh said volunteering was not overly demanding.
“You can nominate the times you’re available and you don’t need to be in peak physical fitness to come along and get involved, we’re always looking for new skills,’’ he said.
Anyone interested in finding out more should attend the meeting on Thursday at 7pm at the SES building, 64 Adam Street, next to the Quarry Hill golf course.
Anyone who has an old car to donate should call 5444 8444.
