PEOPLE looking to build a new home, extension or shed are getting creative, with many turning to old portable classrooms to meet their needs.BRB Modular is currently housing 320 portable buildings at its Kyneton site.The company, which also has an office in Kangaroo Flat, is contracted by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to remove the portables from school sites across the state.The 22-acre Kyneton site is two-thirds full, BRB Modular client services manager Nathan Chilver explained."We identified that someone would have a need for them."They are a good cost-effective alternative to housing or sheds."Mr Chilver said they had sold about 60 portable buildings since 2006."Interest has been huge,'' he said."We get probably a dozen calls a day."We get people from all walks of life (interested in the portables)."One such person is Junortoun resident Roma Pocock.Ms Pocock took delivery of an eight-by-eight-metre portable last Thursday.She plans to use the building as a workshop for her embroidery business."I saw them when I was going to Melbourne and asked around and heard that they were selling them," Ms Pocock said."I thought it would be perfect for what I want to do with it."At just $3500, Roma's portable was also the perfect price."I'm in the process of painting," she said."It had carpet with it; I will roll it out to see how good it is."I'm also having power connected to it."Ms Pocock contacted the council to obtain a permit for the building, but was informed none was required."I think it will work well for me," she said. "I've been looking for something (to use as a workshop), but didn't know what."
