Rochford to plead guilty

18/09/2008 9:47:00 AM
A MANDURANG father of three charged with arson and several dog killings has indicated he intends to plead guilty.

Barry Patrick Rochford, 47, appeared yesterday in Bendigo Magistrates Court via videolink from prison.

His lawyer Shane Gardner told the court that Rochford intended to enter a guilty plea to some of the charges.

The former Bendigo Bank manager faces more than 20 charges, including three counts each of aggravated cruelty to an animal; knowingly causing unnecessary pain to an animal; criminal damage; and single counts of intentionally damaging property; obtaining property by deception; and firearm offences.

Those charges relate to:

theft of three Irish wolfhounds worth $6000 in April 2007;

death of a female Irish wolfhound dog after a hayband was tied around her neck in April last year;

assaults on 10 dogs in Mandurang in August last year;

a fire that caused $3000 damage to a haystack in November 2007;

theft of two Irish wolfhound dogs valued at $6000 in November 2007;

and death of a female Irish wolfhound dog, left tied to a tree in December 2007.

In June this year, Rochford was granted bail on those charges.

Three weeks ago the Mandurang man was taken into custody and charged with further offences.

He now faces two counts of attempted arson and three counts of criminal damage.

Those charges relate to:

a fire at Mandurang Hall on August 4 that caused $10,000 damage;

a fire at a Hallidays Road property in Mandurang in early August;

an attempted arson attack at the Emu Creek Tennis Club on August 26;

a fire at a portable building alongside St Joseph's Catholic Church in Axe Creek on August 26 that caused $50,000 damage;

and an attempted arson attack at a Sutton Grange Road home on August 29.

Prosecutor Stephen Payne said in court yesterday that he made a joint application with Mr Gardner to adjourn the Rochford case until December.

Mr Gardner made no application for bail on behalf of his client and he told the court Rochford faced two custody management issues.

He said the 47-year-old wanted to be seen by a psychiatric nurse, and had an ongoing pain in his head that required treatment from a medical practitioner.

Magistrate William Gibb remanded Rochford in custody for further committal mention on December 10 this year.
