Bendigo is not scheduled to be part of the 12-month National Broadband Network construction plan announced yesterday, but there is still hope to make the early rollout.The federal government announced the 12-month NBN plan and a list of locations where construction would soon begin. Twenty-eight new locations, including Ballarat CBD, will see the construction of fibre optic lines start between now and September 2012.Bendigo NBN Working Group president Bruce Winzar said the announcement of the plan was not unexpected and the location list would be reviewed quarterly. Mr Winzar said further announcements about the rollout were expected early next year. The government said it would be issuing a three-year “indicative view” of the rollout at that time.“We’re looking for Bendigo as a regional city to be announced,” Mr Winzar said. “If Bendigo is not a site, then other towns within the region.”“This is a great (reason) for why Bendigo should be supportive of the NBN,” he said. “We need to be next.”The nationwide construction will eventually provide broadband internet coverage to 13 million premises, and take an estimated ten years to be completed.The NBN will deliver high-speed broadband via fibre optics to 93 per cent of Australian premises by 2021, with seven per cent, many in regional areas, receiving it via fixed-wireless and satellite. – Rosa Ellen
