ILLEGAL: Guerrilla marketing in Bath Lane.

IT might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but a guerrilla marketing campaign for Chancery Lane has backfired. The culprits are yet to be identified, and graffiti in View Street, Bath Lane and Hargreaves Street has left business owners and the City of Greater Bendigo furious. The stencilled messages said “Discover Chancery Lane”.City of Greater Bendigo chief executive Craig Niemann said the council would be looking at the reasons behind the graffiti. There would be further investigations that might lead to a referral to the police.“We are disappointed that someone has decided to use graffiti to get their message across — and it is graffiti,” Mr Niemann said.“It’s a public space, this isn’t appropriate, and it’s illegal and punishable.“As an organisation we are responsible for public spaces, and it’s something we have to deal with from time to time.“When we have to remove the graffiti it comes at a cost to the community.”Mr Niemann could not say what it would cost to clean the pavements.A View Street business owner said the stencilling was messy and stupid.“From a business point of view it might seem like funny marketing that might work in Melbourne — but this is Bendigo.“People were using acid to get rid of it.“They are having to spend time cleaning it when they have probably got better things to do.“I think there are probably people jealous of the reputation that View Street has.“View Street is a classy street.“Everyone wants to come here — this is not going to work in the culprits’ favour.’’
