06 Jan, 2011 03:00 AM
The funeral of the Bishop of Sandhurst Joseph Grech will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral at 1pm today.

Bishop Grech, 62, died on December 28 in St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, after a short illness.

The Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst is preparing for up to 5000 people to attend the funeral, including 33 bishops, many people from the Maltese community, dignitaries and hundreds of young people.

There was a prayer vigil at the cathedral last night following the arrival of Bishop Grech’s coffin.

Prayer of the Church will be offered at St Kilian’s Church at 8am today. At noon, the cathedral will open and will seat 2500 people, while another 780 seats will be in marquees outside, with 500 seats in the open.

Mackenzie Street, between Short and Wattle streets, will be closed to traffic from 7am to provide parking for dignitaries.

Public parking will be available in Wattle, Short, and High streets, as well as Londonderry Reserve, Paul Sadler Swimland car park, the former Chris Wall auto site and QEO car park.
