 Pokies bid takes hit

Pokies bid takes hit

28 Jun, 2011 04:00 AM
City of Greater Bendigo councillors last night took a stance against more poker machines in the city.

Councillors voted against supporting an application for 30 more poker machines at Bendigo Stadium.

Cr Peter Cox successfully put forward a motion to make a “strong representation” to the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation against the proposal.

He said the council needed to “make a comprehensive submission to the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation that the overall net social and economic impact is detrimental”.

Council officers had recommended councillors vote against Bendigo Stadium’s application.

But Cr Alec Sandner put forward a favourable recommendation with the support of Cr Barry Lyons.

Cr Sandner’s motion described the proposal for more poker machines as having a neutral social and economic impact on Bendigo.

His motion failed six votes to two. Bendigo Stadium chairman Brendon Goddard said he was disappointed with the outcome.

Stadium officials want the 30 new pokies, which would take the complex’s total to 105, to help pay for a new multimillion dollar arena.

He said he would have to talk with board members before deciding what step officials would take next. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal earlier this year supported The Foundry Hotel’s plans for poker machines after the council failed to support the proposal.

Mr Goddard failed to rule out stadium officials taking the matter to VCAT.

How can anyone want more poker machines in this city? As we all know, the income generated from those machines comes mainly from people who can afford to lose money the least.

The fact that pokermachine turnover is at its highest on "Pensiondays" should say enough. Many pokermachine users are addicted to them. Poker machines do not produce anything. Not even entertainment.

Commendable action by Cr Peter Cox and the councillors who did not approve the application for 30 more poker machines at Bendigo Stadium.

Most likely Bendigo Stadium will appeal to VCAT and have success or part success. At least ratepayers and residents elected representatives have tried to do the right thing in my opinion - despite the intentions of Bendigo Stadium that the machines are needed to help pay for a new multimillion dollar arena. Even if one million of extra profit from pokies was/is to be used - what suffering that would have/will cause to many of 'the losers'.

I think that it is disgraceful that VCAT can overturn a council recommendation, given that councillors are representatives of the majority of local people so would promote their wishes. Pokies are a blight. They end up costing three times what they bring in for governments...they employ way fewer people than other more responsible industries that they choke out and they bring problems that will negatively impact innocent families of pokies overspenders and children for generations to come! Who in their right mind would want them at all? Let alone 30 MORE of the insidiously addictive things!
