 Pokies bid denied by council

Pokies bid denied by council

29 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
A BID for 30 more poker machines hit a hurdle last night when civic leaders rejected Bendigo Stadium’s planning application.

The decision means the development is likely to go to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

City of Greater Bendigo officers had recommenced councillors refuse the 30 more machines.

The vote was split four to three, with councillors Rod Fyffe, Peter Cox, James Reade and Bruce Phillips against the development.

Cr Reade said rejecting the development would send a strong signal to authorities that Bendigo had enough poker machines.

Bendigo Stadium officials wanted the additional machines, which would take its total to 105, to help fund a multi-million dollar arena.

“I think it is really sad that we has a community rely on pokie revenue to fund development,” Cr Reade said.

Cr Cox praised the facility but said more machines were inappropriate.

“I believe strongly that council has a responsibility to represent its community and implement its policies and 30 additional machines at Bendigo Stadium is clearly outside our policy and therefore the council should refuse the application,” he said.

“If we don’t our policy is not worth the paper it is written on.”

Councillors Lisa Ruffell, Alec Sandner and Barry Lyons said they voted in favour of the development to save ratepayers the cost of contesting the matter at VCAT.

But Cr Phillips said the matter was likely to go to VCAT even if the council did approve the machines, given the 88 objections to the development.

He said approving the application would “send a message to authorities that council is not serious about its policy”.

Cr Ruffell offered a moment of entertainment for the chamber when mid-sentence she wished her team luck for the AFL grand final.

“Go Pies this weekend,” she said.

The Victorian Commission Gambling Regulation this month approved the application, despite the council refusing to support the bid.

With Victorians losing $300,000 an hour on pokies congratulations to councillors Fyffe,Cox,Reade and Philllips for standing up for councils own policy and opposing the Stadiums application. Of couse the pro pokie councillors are correct, the applicants are sure to do a Foundry and go to VCAT when there is so much money to be made, much of it from those amongst us who can least afford it. But unlike the Foundry at least this venue has adequate car parking to accommodate the extra punters.

The former Labor State Government approved the "give away" sell of these machines so rejecting the application will be waste of ratepayers money when it gones to VCAT, as it will because the COGB can't beat the State Government. over this issue.

When will people take responsibility for themselves in this world!!! I have never seen one person being made to play them!!!!

Another case of Bendigo Council being so inept at doing there job. Now it will cost taxpayers more when they take it to VCAT and they get approved!!!!

Castlemaine also faces a challenge with a bid for 65 new pokies in a town that already has just 30. The Bendigo decision will give heart to the community drive to block the bid by the Maryborough Highland Society, and further encourage Castlemaine councillors and council officers to adopt the necessary stand.

at last the Council has stood up for a change to ban these blood sucking machines from our City.

We don't want anymore of them here. they destroy lives.

U put $100 in them and it's gone in minutes don't tell me they pay the correct payouts.

Let's hope people remember which councilors voted to allow the insidious machines and what a ridiculous excuse that is. VCAT would be more likely to disallow them if all 7 voted against them.

Self-responsibility doesn't cut it because gambling is a disease costing the kids and families of those addicted. They're the one's that don't get to eat, yet the gamblers addiction doesn't care.

It's not just about stopping the gamblers, it's also about lessening the strain on our welfare agencies by having to feed and care for those affected.

Thanks to the 4 councilors who voted against them.

Bushee, 29/09/2011 8:53:02 PM,

you are wrong in stating, "VCAT would be more likely to disallow them if all 7 voted against them."

VCAT hearings are totally anew.

Though I detest poker machines for the damage they inflict upon some families and individuals, I support the views of Councillors Lisa Ruffell, Alec Sandner and Barry Lyons.

VCAT also consider precedents. If objectors go to VCAT they will be kicking against a mighty strong wind with the precedents already set in Bendigo.
