PARKING in the city could become more expensive.City of Greater Bendigo officers have recommended the council endorses increased parking fees. The councillors will decide the matter at a meeting tomorrow night. It has been recommended that zone two parking be increased from $2 to $2.50 for daily parking and from 30 cents to 50 cents per hour.Zone two includes the Tom Flood, Queen Elizabeth Oval, McLaren Street and Park Road car parks.Councillors will also discuss licence plate recognition technology that would cost $75,000.The system, which has been implemented in the City of Melbourne after ana evaluation and review, detects vehicles that overstay time restrictions.A fleet car with a camera fitted takes photos of licence plates as it passes.“The system is designed to electronically “chalk” vehicles while the vehicle drives through various parking areas at about 40km/h,” a report to council states.A second pass by the car after the allotted time would detect people who have overstayed. The council will also consider adding another 63 locations to the municipality’s heritage overlay.Staff and historical experts carried out detailed investigations of 80 of 90 short-listed locations. If approved, the council will release a list of the locations for community consultation.A fire service levy, Bendigo Road Transport Strategy and a subdivision at White Hills will also feature at tomorrow night’s meeting. The meeting is at Bendigo Town Hall from 6pm.
