AN overpass at Calder Park Drive on the Calder Freeway is not on a list of priorities for the Federal Government.
The Calder Action Group has called on the State and Federal governments to set aside funding for an overpass, near the Calder Park Raceway.
Group president Russell Mowatt said that given the number of accidents that had happened at the intersection, motorists couldn’t afford to wait any longer.
“The Federal and State government’s have given $30 million each to an interchange at Kings Road on the Calder Freeway (near Taylors Lakes),” Mr Mowatt said.
“We welcome that, but we see a significant gap in time between the current budgetary commitments of 2010-12 until the next round of funding through the Nation Building Program in 2015.
“That is too far away.”
Mr Mowatt said that in the five years from October 2004 to October 2009, there had been 31 crashes, including one fatal and 13 serious injuries.
“The fact remains it is a very dangerous intersection,” he said.
“We understand there are competing demands, but all we can really do is put our hands up. We don’t take anything for granted.”
A spokesman for the State Government said it had committed $37 million to the Kings Road overpass.
“However, we have already advocated for an overpass at Calder Park Drive through our Infrastructure Australia submission and we will continue to do so,” he said yesterday.
“We hope to work with the Federal Government into the future.”
A spokesman for the Federal Government said no money would be allocated at this point in time.
“We are spending, with the State Government, $60 million on Kings Road and that is our focus,” he said.
