UPGRADING the O’Keefe Rail Trail and extending it to Kilmore was the focus of a community meeting in Bendigo last night. The Friends of the Bendigo Kilmore Rail Trail, a track that follows an old train route from Bendigo to Axedale, want to extend the trail through Heathcote and Tooborac to Kilmore. The group’s convenor, Garry Long, said upgrading the trail would help small towns along the route.“The goal of the group is to upgrade the present O’Keefe trail and extend the trail to Kilmore,” Mr Long said.“One of the driving forces behind this is the economic benefits to not only Bendigo, but primarily to the smaller townships like Axedale, Heathcote, Tooborac and Kilmore.”We have applied for Federal Government funds to upgrade the existing trail and extend the trail.”Mr Long hopes the upgrade to Axedale will be finished in the next three months.
