NOT GUILTY: KERANG TRUCKIE WALKS FREE

13 Jun, 2009 01:46 PM
A Supreme Court jury has found Wangaratta truck driver Christiaan Scholl not guilty of all charges stemming from the June 2007 Kerang rail disaster.

50-year-old Mr Scholl was charged with 19 offences, including 11 counts of culpable driving causing death.

The jury delivered its verdict to the Bendigo Supreme Court at about 12.20pm Saturday, having heard from about 30 witnesses over the past three weeks, including Mr Scholl.

This case was always going to end in tears - either for the victims families or the Scholl family. As though enough haven't been shed already over this unfortunate tragedy. Surely there has to be a better way to get to the bottom of such accidents - rather than the humiliation of all concerned.

I am so happy for the truckie and his wife and family. They must have been through hell for the last few weeks.

An accident is an accident.

Good. I think the poor guy has been through enough. Living with what happened will be bad enough. Accidents happen. That's why they are called accidents.

I agree he is not guilty. I blame the government.

The nightmare is over, but his life sentence remains. He will live with this accident every single day for the rest of his life. It's human nature to want to blame someone when terrible things happen, but sometimes it's no ones fault. Mr Scholl, thoughts are with you and your family.

The government needs to clear the trees and address glare as well.
