No prison time for Bendigo drug mum

12 Mar, 2010 12:31 PM
A DRUG-DEALING mother who bought illicit substances from an alleged local drug king pin has narrowly escaped jail time.

Despite claiming to have kicked her drug habit nine months ago, Jessica Hink bought ecstasy, amphetamines and cannabis from her supplier several times between August and October last year.

The court heard the 27-year-old Bendigo woman was buying the drugs for her friends.

Hink appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday where she pleaded guilty to six counts of trafficking and possessing a drug of dependence.

Prosecutor, Leading Senior Constable Dave Somerton, said officers from Bendigo’s Divisional Response Unit had been monitoring Hink’s movements for some time and had witnessed a number of the transactions between Hink and her supplier, which took place out the front or in the car parks of local nightspots.

He said Hink was arrested in October last year as part of Operation Disport, which targeted the trafficking of amphetamines and ecstasy in the Bendigo region.

About 20 people were arrested as a result of the operation.

During the police interview Hink was co-operative and made full admissions about her role in the drug syndicate.

The court also heard that the mother of two made no significant financial gain from the sale of the drugs.

Magistrate Bruce Cottrill said he found it hard to believe someone who claimed to no longer take drugs and who had young children would participate in such a heinous activity.

On the possession charges Mr Cottrill sentenced Hink to a 12-month community based order in which she will have to complete 150 hours of unpaid community work.

On the trafficking charges - amphetamines, ecstasy and cannabis - Mr Cottrill sentenced Hink to nine months imprisonment wholly suspended for 12 months.
