'No pokies cap' upsets Bendigo council

08 Feb, 2012 07:59 AM

THE state government has ruled out reducing the cap on poker machines in regional Victoria, despite ongoing calls from the City of Greater Bendigo.

A further 211 poker machines could be installed within Bendigo’s current cap, with an even higher number allocated if the city’s population continues to grow.

The council says it will continue to lobby the state government to reduce Bendigo’s poker machine cap.

Sandhurst ward councillor James Reade raised a motion last year to appeal to the state government to reduce Bendigo’s cap to its current level.

But Cr Reade said the council was yet to receive a response.

“(The) state government is ignoring the fact the community are against more poker machines,” he said.

“We recognise poker machines are legal, we just don’t want any additional machines.

“That’s the message that’s coming pretty loud and clear from the community.”

Cr Reade said the council would commit “time, resources, and energy into reducing pokie numbers”.

“But we have to ask, what’s the point of wasting our time if community considerations aren’t taken into account by state government?”

The municipality of Bendigo currently has 547 poker machines.

A government spokeswoman said the current cap would allow up to 756 machines in Bendigo, based on the current population.

“Any proposal to establish a new gaming venue or to install additional machines in an existing venue requires the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation to be satisfied that the net economic and social impact of the additional machines will not be detrimental to the well being of the community.”

City of Greater Bendigo planning and development director Prue Mansfield said the government’s policy ignored community concerns.

“There’s no evidence that the state government has listened to the council or the community,” she said.

The City of Greater Bendigo opposed Bendigo Stadium’s recent bid for 30 new poker machines.

The matter is set to go before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in July.

Of course the council will lobby to have poker machine cap reduced. They own one of the venues and don’t want anymore competition. Or is it a phobia on poker machines and the way people choose to spend their money. Poker machines should be taken out of Pubs and given to Clubs. They are the best form of volunteer taxation ever invented.

Years ago I thought poker machines would be a good idea. I didn't realise what a disease they would be allowed to become. The old mechanical machines that took one coin at a time did not have the sheer destructive power of the modern pokies.

Cr Reade, a lot of people are against things this council does too, but you just bulldoze ahead with them anyway, so where is the difference, you just replace the words from people to council and council to government and you then get what we keep getting, now do you get the picture???

Same story different names.

Surely this is where the next 17.5% parlimentary pay increase is coming from... so hurry up and gamble some more folks, I personally am going to scrap my two trade certificates , develop the perfect balance of lies and ignorance, adhere only to publicly unheard agreements , and the backslapping promises behind closed parliamentary doors, that go with it. Let the rest of societies underlings suffer beneath the soles of my parliamentary shoes, and spasmodically pretend to care and advise on how to rectify the suffering, not the problems that cause this, when the cameras are pointing at me..

Agree Peter. I used to enjoy the old one-armed bandits. I actually worked for 2 years at Ainsworth Consolidated Industries in Roseberry, Sydney in the early 60's. Turning out Aristocrat machines.

Can't stand these new electronic monsters.

Just 2 years ago we would never have thought it possible to BAN poker machines...but now there is an increasing call for that solution. Just as the pharmaceuticals industry survived when Heroin Cough Mixture was banned...the gambling industry AND its clubs can live without pokies...and so can WE! Look at Western Australia! Retail is booming there, while our shops are deserted! WHY? WA has NO pokies outside its one smaller casino! Think of other traders who will bear the brunt of these new pokies if they invade Bendigo! Aren't other businesses already struggling enough?

" clubs can live without pokies"

Not really. Bendigo Stadium was doomed before pokies.

But pokies should only be in clubs. Definitely not pubs.

At least the members get some benefit from the clubs.
