The Bendigo veterinary clinic that is caring for the pooch has had people coming in with donations to go towards her treatment costs and has even clients volunteering to make rugs and vests for Cheyanne.

The female dog was found in Eaglehawk on Friday and was fighting for her life, weighing just over 11kg.

But vets have been amazed by Cheyanne’s recovery.

Dr Kellie Anset said things were definitely looking up for the pooch.

“At this stage it’s looking very promising,” she said.

“We’re still not sure long term because of intestine damage but it’s a very different story to last week when we first saw her.

“She was cold and she couldn’t lift her head.

“We initially through it might have been best to put her down.

“But she’s amazed us.”

Cheyanne is being fattened up with a diet high in protein and calories and feeds 10 times a day.

She’s put on 3kg since Friday and is taken out for walks every hours or so to help build muscle tone.

Dr Anset said the dog was rather hesitant around men, which could possibly be a clue to her past.

“We still don’t know what breed she is,” Dr Anset said.

“I’d like to see what she looks like when she’s a bit bigger.

“We’re thinking of doing some DNA testing on her.

“My thoughts are along the line of a ridgeback.”

The RSPCA is investigating Cheyanne’s past and is still looking for her owner.

Bendigo RSPCA inspector Amy Benham said she was following up a few leads.

She said there had been a lot of public response to the dog’s story.

“Our phone hasn’t stopped ringing,” she said. “People have been ringing in and offering to pay her treatment expenses, it’s fantastic.

“And we have had someone who’s offered to foster her so she’ll most likely go to that person.”
