Motorist damages Mitiamo netball courts

09 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE Mitiamo Football and Netball Club is in clean-up mode after a motorist left tyre marks on its new netball courts.

Club president Trevor Mitchell has his fingers crossed that some good old elbow grease will be able to remove the tyre marks, but said he was disappointed.

“Some idiot’s just driven on the court and done a sharp corner and it’s left a black mark,” he said.

“It’s not as if they’ve got on there and done donuts, but it is frustrating. We’re hoping it will just wash off.

“It’s disappointing but there’s nothing we can do about it.”

The club hopes to play its first game on the new netball courts on April 14.

The courts boast a rebound ace surface, similar to the tennis courts at Melbourne Park, and came with a $175,000 price tag.

“The lines and painting were done just before Christmas,” Mr Mitchell said.

“We’ve just finished the bit of concrete for the coaches boxes and we’re going to get that all painted.

“We’re trying to get our fences finished so we can lock it all so something like this doesn’t happen again.”

The new netball courts are at the Mitiamo Recreation Reserve.

Mitiamo Football and Netball Club treasurer Ken Hynes discovered the tyre marks on Monday.

“I’d been there last week so it’s happened sometime in the week,” he said.

“It’s not right into the surface, it’s just black marks on the court itself, which is lucky. But when they’re new courts you don’t want anything like this happening.

“You just wonder why someone does something like this. It’s deflating for us after putting all this work into it.”
