BENDIGO jeweller Paul Sens applied the finishing touches to the acclaimed Michelsen Medal this week.
The medal will be awarded to Bendigo Football League’s player of the season at a pre-grand final gala ceremony, at the All Seasons Resort on September 12.
Mr Sens said the medal was unique because traditional handcrafting techniques were used to form the sterling silver cast which is gold plated and hand engraved.
Hot contenders for this year’s Michelsen include Golden Square’s Grant Weeks, Kangaroo Flat’s Justin Maddern, Sandhurst’s Ben Duscher and Troy Coates of Eaglehawk.
Football commen-tator and Bendigo sporting personality Richard Jones said this year’s Michelsen Medal continued a strong history of BFL awards dating back to 1952.
“The Michelsen Medal was named after former Bendigo mayor and former chairman of the BFL the late Jack Michelsen,” he said.
“The first (Michelsen) was awarded to a former Hawthorn player Kevin Curran in 1952.”
Mr Jones, who has acted as master of ceremonies at the event for several years, said the Ron Best Medal would also be presented to the highest goal kicker of the season.
Grant Weeks won this year’s Ron Best Medal after kicking 145 goals, including eight bags of ten or more.
“Ron Best was one of only two players, including Steven Oliver, to kick 1000 or more goals during their BFL careers,” Mr Jones said.
