A 22-YEAR-OLD Bendigo man will face court today following an incident with a gun at the Newmarket Hotel’s bottle shop that led to three arrests.

Be ndigo Sergeant Bruce Simpson said an argument triggered a sawn-off gun being displayed.

“Three men attended at the drive-through at the Newmarket Hotel and they got into an argument with patrons,” Sergeant Simpson said.

“During that, one of the men has produced a firearm.

“They have then hopped in the car and left the scene.”

The incident triggered a police search, the closure of Murphy Street, the raid of a house and the arrest of three men.

“Because of some very good police work, three men were arrested in Murphy Street,” Sergeant Simpson said.

“A sawn-off firearm was located at a premises in Murphy Street and police interviewed three men.

“One has been charged and remanded to appear in court (today).”

Neighbours stood in their yards during the Murphy Street closure and watched the arrests unfold.

Police arrested two men in the middle of the road and a third on the footpath.

Officers made the two men walk down Murphy Street with outstretched arms before forcing them to lay down on the road.

Police later moved the handcuffed men to the nature strip.

Newmarket Hotel publican Des Pedretti praised police and his staff for their response to the incident.

“Our boys handled it very, very well,” he said.

“Everyone was safe here - there was no attempt made on the Newmarket Hotel.

“It was between a couple of guys in the bottle shop.”

Sergeant Simpson said police were pleased to have retrieved the gun.

He said the assistance of the community led to prompt arrests.

“We were able to wrap it up fairly quickly,” Sergeant Simpson said.

“No one was hurt and the co-operation of witnesses was appreciated.”

Well done to the police. A swift and efficient reaction, with the help of community.

It's amazing how many Police resources are used in this a fairly simple arrest. Five police vehicles can be seen in the first section of the video. That's brilliant considering if you contact them for a safety concern on a Friday or Saturday night you can't get an attendance for over an hour. The local Police are like cowboys, all racing to a scene like this and ignoring the everyday duties, that the community expects and that used to make them feel safe. Not anymore. It's not lack of Police numbers, it's lack of professional attitude.

@Say What? You must be joking. Someone was running around a neighbourhood full of kids with a shotgun - after producing it at a bottle shop. And you're calling Police the cowboys? There is an element of our society who have no regard for consequence. In this case that element was treated appropriately.

@SayWhat. I doubt if the sawn off shotgun was pointed at you or a member of your family, or a loved one, your comment would be the same. My guess is you'd be complaining there wasn't enough police, or likely, thanking the police for their ligntning response.

You're entitled to your opinion of course, but your flippantt comment about 'cowboys' is offensive to say the least. Police put up with so much rubbish, then have to be subjected to comments like this. Damned if you do, or don't. Maybe a poll of the residents who live in the street would be in order. I bet they're thanking the police!

Its all about overtime on Sat/Sun nights, cop brass hate to pay it, so the result is ALL service is cut back...Plenty about during the day because the rates are lower.

Say what you like, how may people have looked down the end of a loaded barrell??? not many.

To call the Police Cowboys for their reaction to this situation and acuse them of not carrying out their duties in a professional way is pathetic.

They acted in a professinal manner to the situation, whether you believe it or. not.

I was at "The Newmarket' on Saturday afternoon at that time, listening to some great live music, and was not made aware of the curfuffle until I read it in the Advetiser. I applaud the local police officers for not blowing this one out of proportion. And to answer 'Bystander' I hadn't seen a reference to SHOTGUN until you mentioned it!. 'Chinese whispers'....

Well done to the police, it was a non-violent arrest, which was a good outcome!

I live directly across the road from this house.

Great police work in resolving this issue though!
