A MARYBOROUGH man accused of using an internet chat service to groom a child for sexual activity has been denied bail.
The Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday heard Bryan Cooper, 25, was already on bail for similar charges when he logged on to the internet earlier this year.
He is alleged to have also used the internet to transmit child pornography and was charged in relation to those alleged offences on Monday.
He was remanded in custody until yesterday, when he appeared for a committal hearing into the prior charges, which include downloading and possessing child pornography, using a carriage service to procure a child under the age of 16 for sexual activity and using a carriage service to transmit and receive child pornography.
In November last year, Australian Federal Police raided Cooper’s Maryborough home.
The court heard that police found material likely to be child pornography on his computer as well as an A4 printout of a naked child in a desk drawer.
Cooper denied all knowledge of the material and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The defence, the court heard, maintained police did not follow proper protocol during the search and that certain evidence was planted.
However, Magistrate Bruce Cottrill committed Cooper to stand trial.
Following the committal hearing, Cooper made a bail application.
The prosecution told the court Cooper would be a risk to the community, particularly young children, if he was released.
Cooper told the court he suffered a significant shoulder injury two years ago that still needed treatment and he was concerned he wouldn’t be able to seek treatment for his injuries while in custody.
Cooper will next face Bendigo Magistrates Court in November, when the fresh charges will be subject to a committal hearing.
The first set of charges will now go before the County Court.
