Man 'made threats' to cop’s mum

06 Nov, 2009 08:44 AM
A MAN accused of stalking and harassing a police officer’s mother will remain in custody after being denied bail yesterday.

Paul Robert Moule, 40, was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly making a number of threatening phone calls to the officer’s 68-year-old mother.

Flanked by police officers, he entered the Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday.

The court heard Moule spent 251 days in jail earlier this year for stalking and harassing an Eaglehawk police officer and threatening his mother.

Detective Sergeant Mark McClure of Bendigo’s Crime Investigation Unit told the court on this occasion Moule made three threatening phone calls, one of which was recorded on the woman’s answering machine.

He described the calls as very aggressive and nasty, and said the victim, who lives alone, had been left shaken.

“She is quite upset,” he said.

Detective Sergeant McClure said he had analysed Moule’s voice and matched it to that left on the answering machine. He said it was not known why Moule had been targeting the officer’s mother, but believed it to be a case of “mistaken identity” as the officer had never met Moule before.

Detective Sergeant McClure opposed the bail application, saying Moule would probably reoffend if released.

“The hate and anger in his voice... concerns me greatly,” he said.

“I believe the matters may continue, may escalate and may even go further, to physical violence.”

Defence lawyer Robert Timms argued Moule should be released on bail as there was no substance to Detective Sergeant McClure’s comments.

He said his client denied the allegations and that there was no hard evidence linking him to the calls.

Magistrate William Gibb denied Moule’s application and remanded him to appear in the Bendigo Magistrates Court on November 19.
