Local way to rid the world of landmines

09 Feb, 2010 10:31 AM
A BENDIGO business is doing what it can to rid communities around the world of landmines.

CSG Demining Consultants’ Carl Chirgwin might get lots of his work overseas, but he is an avid supporter of the Bendigo community and he is encouraging Advertiser readers to buy local.

Mr Chirgwin is the owner and director of the business and said CSG identified and then planned and oversaw the removal of landmines and unexploded ordnances at various places in the Middle East, Africa and South-East-Asia.

“We’ll design the project to achieve the clearance,” Mr Chirgwin said.

“We then manage and monitor the work of the contractor so that people can feel safe to go into an area and do what they need to do.’’

CSG is also working on seven projects in Australia to clear unexploded ordnance such as grenades and artillery.

Despite doing most of its work outside the Bendigo area, Mr Chirgwin said that he tried to spend his money in the area as often as possible.

“I like to make sure the funds I expend go into Bendigo businesses and the community wherever possible,” Mr Chirgwin said.
