Local firm to bring down Loddon Linen

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
BENDIGO firm Hopley Demolitions will begin knocking down the Loddon Linen service building in early April, paving the way for the new Bendigo Hospital.

The local company was awarded the demolition contract yesterday, ensuring about 25 Bendigo residents will be employed on the project.

New Bendigo Hospital Project director David Walker said Hopley beat three Melbourne companies in the tender process.

He said the local factor was part of the decision process and that Hopley presented a strong costing proposal.

“It’s good we’re able to use local industry to help build our project and keep money in Bendigo,” Mr Walker said.

“(Hopley) have demonstrated they can offer specialist local knowledge, expertise and resources for the project.”

Hopley director Ken Hopley said the site would be the biggest-scale demolition job ever completed in Bendigo.

“We’ve never done something on this scale before, and certainly for Bendigo it will be the biggest site ever demolished,” he said.

“There’ll be about 20 of us working with a large range of machinery.

“We’re very excited to be part of the project.”

Loddon Linen is set to close at the end of March and the demolition will begin soon after.

The boiler room and tall chimney pose the biggest challenge, as well as asbestos removal, Mr Hopley said.

The project is expected to take six months.

Bricks and other rubble from the site will be recycled at the Hopley company’s recycling centre in East Bendigo.

Construction on the new Bendigo Hospital is due to begin in December.

OK.................20-25 JOBS -----

what about the people that are already employed at the Linen Service-

What happens to their jobs when this demolition starts-?

Also its fabulous having a FANTASTIC looking hospital with UPDATED equipment and amenities- but whats the whole point if you dont have the EDUCATED doctors and staff to run the place.

End of the Day, we are only focussing on the new/shining things- It doesnt fix the broken Health System or the Staff Ratio.

Not negative just REALISTIC.

“what about the people that are already employed at the Linen Service”

Do keep up. “The service had 46 permanent staff who have either opted for redundancy packages or been redeployed within Bendigo Health.”

“if you don’t have the EDUCATED doctors”

That’d be what the Monash Medical School next door would be for eh? Along with the nursing courses at La Trobe University and BRIT.

Not REALISTIC, just negative.

Well said Peter! So sick of all the nay sayers who sit at their computers and write this rubbish without knowing the facts.

Also isnt part of building this fantastic new hospital with updated facilities and amenities that it will attract even more EDUCATED doctors and nurses to our region???

So I am negative in your eyes???

Well you try telling that to the Linen Staff, the Kitchen Staff (who are going to be without work) and Educated Doctors??

There is not enough $'s to entice them here- that is fact. They remain in the city where the big dollars and world class hospitals are.

At present we have Monash Medical School next door- big deal they are still learning, what about Qualified Reputable and Specialist.

Still just a country Hospital at the end of the line.
