Let’s hear it for silent flyers

GLIDERS from across the state have filled the skies over Raywood as Bendigo Gliding Club hosted the annual Melbourne Cup week camp.

Club vice-president Frank Van Der Hoeven said the coaching and cross-country flying event got off to a good start with 45 launches on Sunday.

The gliders are launched behind tow planes or by a large winch capable of getting the craft up to a height of 2000 feet within a few seconds.

The camp - which included daily lectures, briefings and task-setting with the aim of developing cross-country flying skills - wound up yesterday.

Mr Van Der Hoeven said anyone interested in non-powered flight was encouraged to attend.

Fibreglass gliders and vintage wooden craft would be on display until Sunday.
