The Bendigo Advertiser this week reported the university was reviewing the future of its former Osborne Street student accommodation at Flora Hill.
University vice-chancellor professor John Dewar visited Bendigo yesterday and said it was “too early to say” what the site’s future would hold.
He said the university hoped to increase its student accommodation having already opened new facilities earlier this year.
“We do want to expand the provision of student accommodation,” Mr Dewar said.
“We have got some premises which are a bit tired and we would be very keen to explore all options to redevelop them in partnership with the private sector or anyone who wanted to help us do that.
“All ideas are welcome.”
Mr Dewar said during an interview on ABC Central Victoria radio that La Trobe would seek state and federal government funding for any future student accommodation expansions.
The first group of students to reside in La Trobe’s new Hillside apartments moved in last month.
The complex has a capacity for 200 student beds, 60 solely for the university’s Rural Health School.
The redevelopment cost more than $16 million and received state and federal funding.
City of Greater Bendigo planning and development director Prue Mansfield told the Bendigo Advertiser earlier this week the council would support a new development at Flora Hill.
