Kangaroo Flat pool plans could change with council

08 Feb, 2012 09:48 AM

BENDIGO councillors will tonight decide on a vision for a Kangaroo Flat pool, though the end project will fall into the hands of future leaders.

The council will decide whether to pursue a 25-metre or 50-metre indoor pool at Kangaroo Flat.

But council elections in October could ultimately lead to a new vision for the pool, with contracts and final plans the work of the next elected council.

The council is yet to budget for the indoor pool and will seek funding from external sources once councillors decide on the length of the pool.

Only eight councillors will vote on the matter because Strathfieldsaye’s Cr Keith Reynard is on leave.

Multiple sources have told the Bendigo Advertiser they expect the 50-metre option will win the council’s support.

Three wards each with three councillors will replace Greater Bendigo’s nine single representative wards at the next election.

Councillors the Bendigo Advertiser has spoken with have said they expect this year’s election will be at the forefront of people’s minds during tonight’s vote.

The council endorsed pursuing a 25-metre pool for Browning Street, Kangaroo Flat, in 2010.

Councillors will also consider an aquatic strategy this evening.

A report to the meeting states the Peter Krenz Leisure Centre, which has a 50-metre indoor pool, would need $10 million spent on it during the next decade.

The figure could vary depending on what councillors decide for Kangaroo Flat.

Council chief Craig Niemann said the facility had served the community well but was in need of repairs.

“There is a lot of infrastructure to heat the water,” he said.

“You would not build (the facility) like that today. You would build a different pool.

“It has been a 20-year project but it has worked and met the needs of the community.”

It will always be the case when there are longer term projects being considered by Council that the decisions of current councillors impact on the ability of future councillors to effectively administer affairs within Council at that future time. Some of the recent "disasters" (Mall, Walk Bgo, tram around lake) go back to times BEFORE this current CEO and Councillors (most of them). The sun comes up every morning too! So we must to a degree live with those decisions - which should NOT hog-tie a future Council financially from continuing to put sound useful projects in place for ratepayers.

If elections are in front of councillors minds tonight, they will hear loudly what people are saying that a 50-metre pool is best option and meet needs of a growing area of Bendigo into the future.

I don't care what other facilities it may provide, if it isn't 50metres, I won't be interested in using it... I will drive across town, and contribute to the parking congestion at Eaglehawk.

If I want a coffee, I'll go to a coffee shop.

If I want to work-out, I'll go to a gym.

These optional facilities can be built on a much smaller footprint than a 50 metre pool. It would be stupid to sacrifice the 50m pool site for the sake of peripheral facilities that could be built almost anywhere else in Kangaroo Flat.

Have our Councillors decided not to stand at the next election? Are we getting into the Political arena. Lame duck members until the next election. We are doomed if councillors can't think past the next election. (Have the conviction that you went out after making a difference, please!

A 50 METRE POOL is a MUST, if you dont have the knoweledge about pools then ask us, the people that use the pools 8-9 times a week, i currently drive my 3 children across to Bendigo East Pool and have driven to Eaglehawk before that, councillors must have a vision that will serve the community long into the next 50 years, lets be leaders and build what we need, a 50 metre pool!!!

Don't let the council bully you into a 25m pool like the Mount Alexander Shire is doing to their residents.

If they built a 25m pool in Kangaroo Flat I would still travel to Eaglehawk 3 times a week for my swim & my childrens' lessons .....& I live in Kangaroo Flat.
