JACK ROSS DIES

03 Jun, 2009 01:19 PM
AUSTRALIA'S last surviving World War 1 Veteran and the country's oldest man, Jack Ross, has died.

Mr Ross passed away peacefully at Golden Oaks Nursing Home in Bendigo early this morning.

Mr Ross, who celebrated his 110th birthday in March, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in January, 1918.

He trained at the Wireless Training School and was posted to the 1st Battalion at Broadmeadows camp in Victoria.

The war ended before Mr Ross was posted overseas and he was discharged from the army on Christmas Eve in 1918.

Mr Ross served in the World War II as a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps.

He was awarded the 80th Anniversary Armistice Remembrance Medal, Australia's first commemorative honour, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War 1.

Lest we forget. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. RIP

Deepest condolences to the family and friends of young Jack. It always sad when national treasures such as these people are lost. Our last links to a time past when democracy and justice were being defended by men like Jack. I hope the family can take solace in the knowledge that their efforts will never be forgotten, that their service to our country will always be cherished and that he is now in a better place playing 2 up with his mates and looking down on the wonderful country that he was prepared to defend with his life if necessary. Rest in peace Jack, you have earned it many times over. Lest we forget
