Housing queue stretches

08 Jun, 2009 08:57 AM
PUBLIC housing waiting lists have hit a seven-year high, but the region’s top housing body said the news wasn’t all doom and gloom.

“Things are tough out there, we know they’re tough, they’ve been getting tough for some time,” Loddon Mallee Housing Services chief executive officer Ken Marchingo said.

“It’s a result of a huge collision of many factors . . . but what we are seeing are some very strong responses from Government,” he said.

Mr Marchingo’s comments came as state shadow minister for housing Wendy Lovell accused the Government of ignoring the growing crisis.

“The Brumby Government’s waiting list for public housing has exploded to a seven-year high, with 38,980 families now languishing on the Government’s statewide public housing waiting list,” she said.

“The ever-increasing waiting list highlights the Brumby Government’s failure to deliver effective affordable housing policies over the past 10 years.

“The waiting list for public housing in Bendigo increased by 50 families in the March 2009 quarter, taking the waiting list to 785 applicants,” she added.

While not disputing the figures, Mr Marchingo defended the Government’s attempts to rectify what he described as a generation of Federal Government inactivity.

“You don’t get an affordable housing crisis overnight in this country,” he said.

“We’ve also got a global financial crisis which has turned into a worldwide recession . . . there is no denying the fact that jobs are falling away and unemployment is rising.

“When that happens you will always find public housing waiting lists rise,” he added.

Mr Marchingo applauded the Federal Government’s recent economic stimulus package, which aimed to create about 5000 new resident housing units.

“Right now as we speak, Victoria . . . is embarking on the greatest residential development program that this state has ever seen,” he said.

“Things are dire, things are grim, but it’s not all bad news. There’s plenty of action out there.”

There is plently of public housing blocks of land that have had houses removed around our area. These blocks of land have been empty for a number of years now. Housing also needs to crack down on certain public housing tennants who continually break their tennancy agreement by harrassing other tennants, hooning around back yards in unlicenced cars, holding parties 24/7. There are propertys that look like the tip with parts of cars and other rubbish everywhere.

Well said Rebecca, For the life of me i fail to understand why tennants of public housing, not all, but a large percent, have no respect for the affordable public housing that they are giving. Its not hard to tell when your in a public housing area, as pointed out in the above letter, rubbish strewn all over the yard, disgarded house hold items can allso be seen, car bodies and parts, and i have never understood why nobody has gardens or lawns, and dont use lack of water resourses as an excuse. Its high time the government steped in and made these tennants tidy up there act, and government property, its a disgrace and a sure sighn of no respect, not only to themselves but to there children as well, not to mention destroying goverment property. What does the future hold for children of parents that live in such filth, the mind boggles, we will have another generation of adults that will do what they have grown up around. No more getto,s, we all need to take a stand, lets have public housing clean up day, and make these social misfits clean there act up or get out....
