A GROUP of cyclists undertaking a 1200-kilometre ride to support children with life-threatening illnesses arrived in Bendigo yesterday. The Cycle4Sam ride from Bright to Adelaide aims to raise more than $60,000 for the paediatric palliative care unit of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide. The event is inspired by the life of Sam Roberts, who died, aged four, from Niemann-Pick Disease Type C.The Roberts Family Fund was set up in 2006, and since then more than $130,000 has been raised for designated projects within the paediatric palliative care service. This year’s ride is being led by Sam’s parents Marty and Michelle Roberts. The group of 12 will push on to Halls Gap today.Mr Roberts was hopeful the group would make it to Adelaide by Monday. All proceeds raised will go to services of the palliative care unit, primarily art therapy and respite holidays for families.Nurse Sara Fleming, who is also taking part in the ride, said many families had few places to turn for assistance, because their child suffered from a lesser known condition. To make a Cycle4sam donation phone: 1800 008 483 or visit www.cycle4sam.com
