IT’S not every day that a piece of Bendigo’s history goes on the market.
But the 136-year-old Neangar House is for sale.
The building, in Peg Leg Road, Eaglehawk, was constructed in 1874 and was a post office up until 1992.
The red-brick, Georgian-style house has five bedrooms, five bathrooms, two kitchens and a parents’ retreat and boasts triple-brick external walls.
Owners Nigel and Wendy Lampert have had the house since 2002 but said that, unfortunately, the time had come to sell.
“We love the old place,” Mr Lampert said.
“At the time we were after something low maintenance and looking for a lifestyle change.
“It’s absolutely beautiful.
“Everything that happened in Eaglehawk is right on our doorstep.”
Mr Lampert said the building needed to go to someone who loved heritage. “It needs someone who will value and treasure it.”
Since its closure as a post office in 1992, the building has been a bed and breakfast and cafe and also a private home.
Eaglehawk Heritage Society president Bev Hanson said the building was important to Eaglehawk’s history.
“It’s significant because all the civic buildings of Eaglehawk are in one locality.
“If anything, it shouldn’t have been sold into private ownership.
“We would have liked to see the whole precinct remain as a whole.”
