EXTENSIVE scaffolding has been erected at the historic Castlemaine Railway Station in readiness for restoration work scheduled to start this week.
The first stage of the restoration includes repairs to the main station’s slate roof and to the chimney.
Work is scheduled for completion early next month.
State Member for Bendigo West Bob Cameron said the works, costing $330,000, were funded by the State Government and would be managed through VicTrack.
Further works next year will include repairs on the island platform and goods shed, replacement of the island platform toilet, repairs to the refreshment room and the instalment of water tanks. Mr Cameron said those works were due for completion in June.
Castlemaine Railway Station is a heritage-registered building, historically and architecturally significant to the state of Victoria.
“The investment to upgrade the station serves to conserve our unique Victorian Goldfields Railway heritage for future generations to appreciate,’’ Mr Cameron said.
“The upgrade will also ensure the transport hub provides a safe and clean environment for railway staff and passengers using the V/Line and the Victorian Goldfields Railway.’’
The restoration to the station has been funded through an annual heritage budget of $1 million allocated through the VicTrack Heritage Panel to restore buildings listed on the Victorian Heritage register.
The works are among the most substantial investments this year.
