THE sale of Fortuna Villa took another tentative step forward yesterday after the City of Greater Bendigo received a report from the Federal Government.
The due-diligence report paved the way for a priority sale application that should be processed by October.
Federal MP Dr Mike Kelly, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, was in Bendigo to visit the former military mapping centre and meet council officials and the Fortuna Action Group.
Dr Kelly downplayed work that had to be done on the property before its sale.
“There is not much that needs to be done to sell the property,” Dr Kelly said.
“There are some minor clean-up issues relating to some loose, very minor, asbestos.”
No dates were given to the clean-up or future sale of the historic mansion, but Dr Kelly insisted the sale was a priority.
We are keen to resolve the future (of Fortuna Villa) as soon as possible,” Dr Kelly said.
He said the historical significance of Fortuna Villa would have to be recognised by potential buyers.
“Whoever purchases the site will determine its ultimate usage, but it will have to be in accordance with those heritage values,” he said.
“Our concern is to make sure heritage values are respected.
“We have listed the property on the Commonwealth heritage list and are considering now moving forward to listing it on the Victorian heritage register.”
Bendigo MP Steve Gibbons does not expect the property’s value to be determined until mid-way through next year and reiterated his stance on the sale.
“My opinion is it should stay in public ownership,” Mr Gibbons said.
Fortuna Villa Action Group president Merle Hall said the group was happy that the report had been submitted to the council, and hoped their submission was considered.
“We hope our council officers will read the submission they have in conjunction with this massive report,” Ms Hall said.
“They only have three months to justify the case for a priority concession sale, which is of some concern.”
The action group is worried the time frame is not long enough for council to carry out a full business plan or feasibility study.
Ms Hall said the group did not want to delay the sale any longer.
