 EX-CCB MAN’S BOY SEX SHAME

EX-CCB MAN’S BOY SEX SHAME

19/11/2008 8:58:00 AM
A FORMER Catholic College Bendigo staff member has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing two young boys almost 20 years ago.

Geoffrey Daryl Toomey, 38, who was described as a “popular staff member’’, yesterday pleaded guilty in the Bendigo County Court to five charges of gross indecency and three of indecent assault.

Toomey’s victims were aged six and 11 at the time of the assaults.

The court heard that between January and August 1991, Toomey abused one boy several times at his home.

At the time, Toomey was about 20 and the boy about 11. On other occasions, Toomey also played pornographic material to the boy. Crown prosecutor Patrick Southey said the other victim - a boy aged about six - was abused in a similar pattern.

The victim of a former Catholic College Bendigo staff member who pleaded guilty to child sex offences yesterday says he has found healing by bringing the case to court. Speaking outside Bendigo County Court the victim, now an adult, said he felt used as a child.” The whole thing now has been very healing for me - and that’s why I know that if others are able to talk about it and learn, that they can get some healing as well,’’ he said.

The man’s abuser, Geoffrey Daryl Toomey, 38, pleaded guilty yesterday to five counts of gross indecency and three charges of indecent assault.

The charges stem from an array of incidents nearly 20 years ago. The two boys he assaulted were aged about six and 11.

Reading from a statement from the first victim, Mr Southey said the boy had entered a deep depression as a result of the abuse.

“The emotional stress of keeping the dirty secret took an almost immediate toll on my emotional well being . . . I was too young to understand,’’ he said.

“I was in a hold that I could not get out of and I used to cry myself to sleep night after night, wondering when this pain would go away.

“The abuse of this trust and the events that occurred should not be allowed to happen to anyone.

“The reason I brought it into the open was to shine light on it and make sure it doesn’t continue both with Geoff and in the broader community.

“I am looking for prevention and education.’’

Catholic College principal Darren McGregor said in court yesterday: “I never had any concerns about Geoff and the way he conducted himself.’’

Describing him as reliable, loyal and committed, Mr McGregor said Toomey was a “popular member of staff’’.

Working in “daily organisation’’, Toomey was responsible for dealing with absent staff and the details of school excursions.

Mr McGregor said Toomey was shocked when first spoken to by police, and apologetic for the situation he’d put the college in.

“He expressed to me a very strong remorse,’’ he said.

Outside court yesterday the victim said he had achieved his aims.

He said he had found healing by taking the case to court.

The man said he had felt used as a child.

“The whole thing has been very healing for me - and that’s why I know that if others are able to talk about it and learn, that they can get some healing as well,’’ he said.

“I’m really happy because the two goals I had were for him to be a registered sex offender so he’s monitored, and the second was to get some exposure about him and about sexual abuse in general.’’

Judge Lisa Hannan ordered Toomey be taken into custody yesterday afternoon. He will be sentenced on Friday.

However, his victim will not be there - confident his role is complete.

“No, I think I’m going to just leave that,’’ he said. “This is all I needed to do.’’

This is a disgrace to all the students at CCB because we all disliked him and we all found a really weird sense around him.

This is hard to accept from such a loved staff member, past teacher and friend. Tragic and upsetting it is to me, such offenders must face justice. This event occured some time ago, and yes he deserves to face justice, but lets not forget the Mr Toomey we all remember and love. He still deserves our support and friendship; lets pray he gets the support he needs.

Why is CCB being used in the head lines? I go to CCB and I feel like you are trying to make our school look bad, this happened 20 years ago, way before I was even born. Mr Mitchell was always a nice man when he worked here, he has done a bad thing a long time ago, but he didn't do it at school, so why use our name?

Mr Toomey (Mitchell) was a staff member of CCB. There is no intention to damage the school or create any asociation by making reference to CCB other than to say a former staff member has pleaded guilty to these crimes.

This is quite shocking to hear. Even though this was a while ago and yes justice should be served, but he is still a human being and he should have our "respect, care and support". All prayers go out to staff, students and parents and of course Mr Toomey, we all need it. Thank you.

And what about his victims? All very well for you to say he deserves support and friendship, but I doubt the victims will have much of that because of his abuse.

He deserves to be punished with the full force of the law. Anyone who commits crimes against children, particularly sexual, should be subject to the maximum penalties.

This is tragic and distressing, but yes, justice had to be served. Mr Toomey (known as Mr Mitchell) may have been liked by some, but not by others. I had been in one of his classes and there was a vibe of freakishness and he partially stared at the boys. No offence to anyone who really liked him, but we hope that he gets what he deserves.

I remember Mr Mitchel (what he was called at school) as a nice and funny teacher that I would often talk to after school, he was one of my favorite teachers. It's shocked me that he could do this, but he deserves everything he gets, every sex offender does.

I find it hard to believe that there was only two children he abused. I believe there would be more and I just hope that they come forward to make sure he gets the time he deserves.

Just remember that he wasn't a SCHOOL TEACHER for no reason, he wanted to be around kids, sex offenders DON'T change!

I agree with bgoexpat - he pleaded guilty to child molestation - throw the book at him and anyone else he carries out these horrendous crimes! To all the bleading hearts out there I think you should have a really good look at yourselves and the moral code you live by...

He was stupid and he should know that. He was such a great CCB teacher and not many people would be able to understand that, but he was.

He cracked the lamest jokes, but they always made you smile walking into the school.

But back to when he had done the assaults, it was wrong, and he should be punished, but I suppose the punishment that is given to him is by the moral code, and whether you see his side of the story by seeing that it happened 20 years ago and the victims are only letting it out now.

Hmm, I would like to point out that we don't know him as "Mr Toomey" we was known as "Mr Mitchell" and I think some people are getting a little confused. I have spoken to many of my friends about this and they are all shocked.

I also think that you shouldn't be using the school's name because it's degrading to us and will give us a bad reputation.

Couldn't you just say a local school?

I do think he deserves a long time put away. I don't see how anyone could get away with that and the child sex offenders law is not hard enough because in almost every case the offender will do it again.

I think they should be locked up for life because they ruined the chance of someone to have a good childhood and life because they will never forget that.

This probably doesn't make any sense, but oh well :P
