Elmore field days focus on a climate change future

6/10/2008 9:56:00 AM
PRACTICAL measures for tackling climate change are high on the agenda at this week's Elmore Field Days.

Victoria's Department of Sustainability and Environment is hoping the popular event will be an ideal opportunity to outline ways up to 50,000 ordinary regional Victorian landowners can get involved in sustainability programs.

DSE's north-west region sustainability officer Sandra Wilson said the department would be part of the climate change speakers program at 11.30am each day, and staff will be on hand to answer questions about Victoria's climate change programs and how people can be involved.

"We encourage farmers and business people to learn more about the impacts of climate change on their work and participate in local programs to reduce climate change and adapt to its effects," Ms Wilson said.

"Introducing practices that reduce the impact of climate change are not only good for the environment, but can save businesses and households money.

"And individual Victorians can learn more about assistance available to households to reduce the impacts of climate change including: rebates, reducing costs of consumption and more," she said.

The theme of this year's field days is Capitalising on a Climate of Change, and DSE has teamed up with the Department of Planning and Community Development, the Department of Human Services and Regional Development Victoria to run a combined stand in the climate change marquee.

DSE supports a number of local climate change programs, including training courses in living sustainably, a one-stop-shop to learn and compare simple actions to reduce household consumption and bills, and the Black Balloons campaign, which is showing Victorians the benefits of cutting their energy use.
